Shuhei Yoshida: PSN expansion to PSP is planned by PSP2U Topic: PSP Guides

PSP PS3

Joystiq and PS Fanboy interviewed Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida about a number of hot topics earlier this week. However, one of the big talking points had to be the expansion of the PLAYSTATION Network beyond the PS3. Currently, home console owners can sign in using a single PSN ID, and can access a Friends list, send messages to friends, and play games together online.

During the E3 keynote, Sony briefly noted that they wanted to expand the PSN\'s "universal ID," and we asked Yoshida if that expansion could hit the PSP. We asked if using the same PSN ID from the PS3 can access a universal Friends list on the PSP. His response? "That\'s the plan."

Already, implementing the PLAYSTATION Store directly on the PSP is in the works. It won\'t be too long before we see even more features of the PS3 popping up on the PSP: Friends lists, messaging and who knows what else ... trophies, perhaps? Stay tuned in the coming days for the full itnerview.

NPD: Over 337k PSP units sold in June by PSP2U Topic: PSP Guides

PSP NPD

The introduction of the God of War bundle seems to be responsible for yet another stellar month of PSP sales Over 337k PSP systems were sold in June in North America -- that's 85% more than last month! While hardware sales are great, we'd love to see these numbers translate to software sales. Hopefully, new PSP owners are taking their time to discover the great library of PSP games out on store shelves.

What is a PSP? by PSP2U Topic: PSP Guides

What is a PSP?

Portable PlayStation or Tiny Entertainment Center?

PSP

What IS It?

As its name suggests, the PSP -- or PlayStation Portable -- is a smaller, lighter version of Sony\'s PlayStation. It\'s not as powerful as the PS2, but more powerful than the original PlayStation, and it has a built-in screen and speakers so you don\'t have to plug it in to anything to use it.

As with the full-size PlayStation2, which can play DVDs and audio CDs as well as PlayStation game discs, the PSP is more than just a gaming handheld. The PSP plays games in UMD (or Universal Media Disc) format, but UMD format is also used for movies and other audio-visual content, and the PSP can pay those, too. And if that isn\'t enough, the PSP can also play audio, video, and still image content off of Memory Sticks (Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo are the compatible formats).

Unlike the PlayStation or PlayStation2, the PSP comes equipped with Wi-Fi, so you can connect with other players wirelessly and, if your firmware is version 2.00 or higher, get online to browse the internet. Sony has also announced an add-on camera and a GPS device for use with the PSP, expanding its capabilities even further.

1Up: VP Scott Rohde discusses the FFXIII shocker, Sony's product strategy, and more. PSP Games Show

Whether you thought its press conference was the best of the bunch or were bored to tears by it, you'd be hard-pressed to deny that E3 week has been big for Sony in several ways. Among announcing a handful of new titles, showcasing several eagerly awaited ones, and losing one of their biggest third-party exclusives, the list of upcoming game releases for Sony is more important than ever. I had a chance to speak to Sony Vice President of Product Development Scott Rohde about the company's E3 showing alongside Sony PR manager Ron Eagle on Wednesday afternoon.

How To: Link your Playstation Underground and Network IDs by PSP2U Topic: PSP Guides

How To: Link your Playstation Underground and Network IDs to create a Portable ID

psp

Gamertell has posted step-by-step instructions for lining your Sony Playstation Underground ID to your Playstation Network ID. The result is what Sony calls a Portable ID. From the article"

"[G]oing through the process generates an image with your avatar in it as well as some code around it that links to your ID page...

Of course, Sony wants you to paste your Portable ID code in your email, forums and other social networking stuff since it not only gets your ID out there but also helps promote Sony and the PS3."
